10 dead after shooting in South African hostel

Multiple victims were also taken to hospital with serious injuries in the deadly attack

Ten people have been killed and more than ten others injured in a mass shooting at Saulsville Hostel in Atteridgeville, west of Pretoria. Emergency services say gunfire erupted at around 4am, with police confirming that multiple victims were taken to hospital.

SAPS national spokesperson Brigadier Athlenda Mathe said: “At least 10 people were killed in Saulsville, Pretoria. More than 10 were injured and have been taken to the hospital. District Commissioner Major Gen. Thine is on the scene.”

South Africa continues to grapple with high levels of gun violence, driven by illegal firearms, gang activity and long-standing patterns of unrest. Shootings have risen to levels not seen since the 1990s, placing huge pressure on communities and police forces already struggling with stolen and unregistered weapons.

The country has been rocked by several mass killings in recent years. In September 2024, fifteen women and two men were shot dead in two neighbouring houses in Lusikisiki, Eastern Cape, during what was reported to be a family gathering. The motive remains unknown.

Earlier, in April 2023, ten members of one family were murdered in their Pietermaritzburg home after two gunmen allegedly stormed the property and opened fire. And in January 2023, eight people were shot dead at a birthday party in Gqeberha. Months before that, 16 people were killed at a bar in Soweto when gunmen armed with rifles opened fire on customers.

The investigation into the latest attack is ongoing.
