Premier League football club Manchester City have launched a Man City Fortnite map in the game’s creative mode.
‘The Ladder [Man City]’ 1v1 map is available now using the game access code 7124-6951-4339. It’s inspired by the club’s ‘glyphs’, a series of symbols which represent a collection of recognisable icons within the City brand.
The map has 11 themed arenas such as the ‘blue moon’ level, inspired by City’s anthem, and the ‘bee’ level, taking inspiration from the Manchester worker-bee.
Designed with support from Karta, the map will see players climb the ranks in 1v1 matches. Winners ascend the ladder to the higher arena, while those who lose descend to the lower arena. A champion is crowned by being the winner of the final round in arena one.
To celebrate the launch, Manchester City will release new content across its channels during the men’s first team’s pre-season tour in the US, with activations planned around the club’s first fixture against Celtic Football Club in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.
The Man City Fortnite map is the latest development in the club’s gaming and esports strategy, an area of focus for the brand in recent years. Efforts to engage both football and esports audiences has seen City create ‘bespoke experiences and tailored engagement opportunities such as unique co-branded collaborations, the implementation of professional esports teams across titles such as Fortnite and dedicated esports content channels’, City said in a press release.
Nuria Tarre, Chief Marketing and Fan Experience Officer at City Football Group, commented: “We are delighted to launch our official Fortnite Creative map in collaboration with Epic Games for gaming and football fans around the globe to enjoy.
“This launch is a great new addition to our off-pitch fan engagement activations and we are excited to see a crossover of esports and football fans dive into this immersive City experience.”
Several brands have created Fortnite creative maps to engage with various audiences. Last year, the All England Lawn Tennis Club partnered with American Express to launch a virtual Race to Wimbledon in Fortnite Creative. And a few months ago, the British Army pulled a training course-style map in Fortnite after being accused of using it as a recruitment tool.
The Man City Fortnite map is another example of the football world tapping into esports.
