With Bonfire Night over and done with, Christmas shopping season has well and truly begun.
Those looking to earn some extra money in the run-up to, and during, the festive season have a large number of options – with many employers looking to bring on new staff to help with the seasonal rush.
Among the companies looking for new Christmas employees are Royal Mail, Pizza Hutt, and retail companies such as TK Maxx, Harvey Nichols, and Poundland.

There are a large variety of positions available, both part-time and full-time, and some employers even state that there is the potential for longer term work.

Next
Clothing chain Next are looking for seasonal staff to help out over the Christmas season in their new St James store, including their Boxing Day sale. The successful applicant would work an average of 14.75 hours per week over six weeks, and would be paid between £6.55 and £8.91 per hour.
They say: “We need support in the run up to Christmas for between 3-12 weeks work. This will include our busiest time of year and the Next Sale which starts on Boxing Day.”

Royal Mail
Unsurprisingly, Christmas is the Royal Mail’s busiest time of the year, and so they are looking for Seasonal Mail Sorters to help manage the festive rush at their Cutlins Road and Royal Highland Centre branches. Successful applicants will be paid £11.40 for day shifts and £13.70 for night shifts.
They say: “Just like Mr & Mrs Claus, you’ll play a key role in bringing Christmas to people across the UK! As a Mail Sorter, you’ll be unloading mail and parcels from our vans, moving them through our warehouses and ensuring that they arrive at their destination safely. During a single shift, you could sort over a million items with your team! It’s a very important role so flexibility, commitment and enthusiasm are key.”

Jewellery company Pandora are seeking a Seasonal Sales Assistant in their Gyle store. The contract would end on January 9. The salary of the role is not stated on the advertisement, but Pandora calls it “competitive”.
They say: “With Christmas around the corner, we are currently seeking enthusiastic and results-driven Seasonal Sales Assistants to join our team for the festive period. Harvey Nichols
Department store Harvey Nichols are currently advertising a number of positions over the Christmas period, including a Foodmarket Sales Assistant, Customer Service Consultant, Make up & Fragrance Specialist, Style Advisor, Beauty Advisor, and a Waiter. The roles are unsurprisingly a mix of full-time and part-time, with varying salaries. Some positions are also home-based.

TK Maxx
TK Maxx is looking for Christmas staff in both its St Andrews Square and Fort Kinnaird stores. The hours for the St Andrews position will be between 8pm and 7am, while the Fort Kinnaird role will have various hours available between Monday and Sunday. A salary for the roles is not advertised but TK Maxx states that it is offering a “competitive rate of pay”.

The WHSmith store at the Gyle shopping centre is looking for Christmas Staff. Successful applicants will be expected to work weekends and will be paid the national minimum wage.

Schuh on Frederick Street is wanting to recruit a temporary part-time Sales Advisor. A salary is not listed, nor is the number of hours the successful applicant would be expected to work per week.

Iconic jeans makers Levi Strauss & Co want a part-time Christmas Temp to help out at their Princes Street shop over the busy festive season. The job listing advertises a “competitive salary”, and whoever gets the job will be required to work 16 hours a week.

Clarks has put out an advertisement for a Seasonal Sales Team Member for its Cameron Toll branch. A salary is not stated, though Clarks calls it “competitive”, and the successful applicant will work 8 hours per week over two months.

The roles, in its St James Quarter and Ocean Terminal stores, involve tasks such as assisting with wrapping gifts and greeting customers. A salary is not advertised for either position.

Greeting card chain Scribbler is looking for a Temporary Christmas Sales Assistant for its Princes Street store. The position will pay between £8.71 and £9.31 an hour, and the company are looking for both full-time and part-time applicants. The contract is for two months.

Budget chain Poundland wants a temporary Sales Assistant over the Christmas period to assist with processing till transactions and replenishing stock. The advertisement doesn’t state which store in particular is looking for staff, or a salary, but the position will last until the end of December.
