20 TV shows everyone will be talking about in 2023, from The Idol to Kaleidoscope

Wwhether you’re looking for celebrity deep-dives, riotous dramas, cozy book adaptations or the return of old favourites, there’s plenty of television to keep your eyes peeled in 2023.

Stephen Graham to star in a new Netflix crime drama, Bodieswhile Lily Rose-Depp and The Weeknd can be seen on the new show from Euphoria writer Sam Levinson, The idol.

David Nicholls bestseller One day being adapted for TV and shows from Big Brother until Succession return to television.

There are also comedies with familiar faces like Simon Bird and Lily Allen, and telling documentaries from Robbie Williams and Pamela Anderson.

Here’s what we’re most looking forward to in the next 12 months…

Pamela: a love story

Netflix, January 31

Pamela Anderson was remarkably quiet when the show was based on her life, Pam and Tommy, came out in February 2022. Now we know why: She’s made a telling documentary with Netflix, which will feature personal videos and diaries, charting her fame and that infamous sex tape scandal.

Heartstopper season two

Netflix, 2023

On the cozier end of the spectrum, Heart stopper returns after the widely adored first season. Kit Connor, Joe Locke and Yasmin Finney all return for this drama about teen romance and self-discovery.

Doctor who

TBEN One, Nov

At the end of the year, three special episodes marking the show’s 60th anniversary will feature familiar faces from David Tennant to Catherine Tate, while newcomer (and Sex education favorite) Ncuti Gatwa will also make his debut as the 15th Time Lord.

Daisy Jones and the Six

Amazon Prime Video, March 3

The film adaptation of Taylor Jenkins Reid’s hit book is just around the corner. Like the novel, the miniseries is set in the 1970s LA music scene, starring Riley Keough and Sam Claflin as musical rivals turned band mates Daisy and Billy.

Nolly

ITVX, February

Anything with Russell T Davies’ name in the credits is worth checking out, and his latest show is this three-part drama centering on actor Noele Gordon, who was axed from her much-loved daytime ITV show. intersection in 1981. We took a look and can confirm that Helena Bonham-Carter is having a lot of fun in the role.

Sex education season four

Netflix, 2023

Although he will be quite busy in the Tardis on TBEN One, Ncuti Gatwa returns as the irrepressible Eric in Sex education season four. Asa Butterfield, who plays Otis Milburn, has teased a new school, new locations and said there would be “some new characters”.

The idol

Sky Atlantic Ocean, 2023

Lily Rose-Depp will star The idol, created by Abel Tesfaye (The Weeknd), Reza Fahim and Sam Levinson. Made the last one Euphoriaand from the looks of it, this new show about a pop star and a cult leader seems to be just as debauched.

Happy Valley season three

TBEN One, New Year’s Day

The new year kicks off with the return of Sarah Lancashire’s no-nonsense buyer Catherine Cawood Happy valley. The show is back after a seven-year hiatus, but is as gripping and original as ever. James Norton also reprises his role as the monstrous Tommy Lee Royce.

You season four

Netflix, Part 1: February 9, Part 2: March 9

Penn Badgley is back as scary old Joe for the fourth season of YOU. The series will be released in two parts and the action moves to a new city: London. Ghosts star Charlotte Ritchie joins as an art gallery director who immediately feels a distrust of Joe when he starts circling one of her friends.

Dreamland

Aerial comedy, 2023

Lily Allen will show her acting talent again Dreamlanda seaside comedy inspired by the 2018 award-winning short film of the same name. It plays along Doctor who‘s Freema Agyeman and, set in Margate, will be a darkly comedic exploration of multi-generational female relationships and their dysfunctional family dynamics.

One day

Netflix, 2023

David Nicholls bestseller from 2009 One day was previously adapted into a sob-fest of a movie in 2001, starring Anne Hathaway. Now Netflix turns the story of lovers Emma and Dexter into a series, with NHS drama’s brilliant Amika Mob This is going to hurt.

Shrink

Apple TV+, January 27

Romcom kingpin Jason Segel plays a therapist with many problems of his own in this new show from the team behind it Ted Lasso. Harrison Ford and Jessica Williams co-star as fellow therapists in his practice.

Bodies

Netflix, 2023

Stephen Graham stars in this new series alongside Kyle Soller, Jacob Fortune-Lloyd, Amaka Okafor and Shira Haas, playing four detectives in four different time periods trying to solve the same crime. It is an adaptation of Si Spencer’s 2015 graphic novel of the same name.

Kaleidoscope

Netflix, January 1

The first thing you need to know Kaleidoscope is that it is non-linear, meaning that the episodes can be watched in almost any order. It is inspired by the biggest robbery ever, when $70bn (£57.9bn) worth of bonds went missing in midtown Manhattan during Hurricane Sandy. It stars Giancarlo Esposito, Paz Vega, Rufus Sewell, Tati Gabrielle, and many more, and we don’t think we’ll fully understand how it works until we watch it.

Robbie Williams documentary

Netflix, 2023

We don’t know the name of this documentary yet, but we do know that it will be – according to the “Angels” singer himself – “full of sex and drugs and mental illness”. “I’m more inclined than most people to leave everything behind,” he said of the show. “I very rarely, if ever, said, ‘That’s too much, take it off.’”

Big Brother

ITV2, 2023

I’ve had homes on Channel 4 and Channel 5 before, Big Brother now returns for the first time since 2018 – and airs on ITV2. The host has yet to be announced, but our money is on former presenter Davina McCall or Famous Big Brother winner Rylan Clark.

The Crown season six

Netflix, 2023

The sixth and final series of the royal drama returns Imelda Staunton as the Queen and Jonathan Pryce as the Duke of Edinburgh. All eyes will be on showrunner Peter Morgan to see him cover the death of Diana, Princess of Wales in a car crash in Paris.

Succession

Sky Atlantic Ocean, 2023

The Roy kids were left in disarray in the season three finale, with Brian Cox’s Logan cutting his three kids – Kendall (Jeremy Strong), Shiv (Sarah Snook) and Roman (Kieran Culkin) – from making decisions for Waystar Royco . Who knows what will happen next, but there will certainly be lavish parties and underhandedness aplenty.

Black Mirror season six

Netflix, 2023

The dystopian sci-fi anthology series is back, with Rob Delaney, Myha’la Herrold, Paapa Essiedu, Josh Hartnett, Aaron Paul and Kate Mara among the already announced cast. Creator Charlie Brooker is always very secretive when it comes to storylines, so keep an eye on this space for more news in that department.

All others burn

Channel 4, January 9

See this new sitcom The intermediaries star Simon Bird plays the leader of an ultra-religious cult. It looks very silly indeed, and is expected to be an eruption of cults, following the ups and downs of the Lewis family as they try to live their lives in modern society, while protecting themselves from eternal damnation .
