The Louvre jewellery heist, Paris
The world’s most visited museum just got robbed. On a crisp Parisian morning on 19 October 2025, four thieves in construction vests clocked in early for a different kind of shift. At 9.30am, they rolled up in a vehicle-mounted lift, ascended the façade of the Louvre’s Galerie d’Apollon, broke a window with cutting tools on the first floor, and smashed open the display cases holding eight pieces of France’s Crown Jewels, worth a cool €88 million ($102 million).
In a heist that lasted under eight minutes (four of those spent inside the museum), they made off with an emerald necklace and earrings once worn by Empress Marie Louise, sapphire sets belonging to Queen Marie-Amélie and Queen Hortense, and a tiara and brooch of Empress Eugénie, with the crown later being found damaged, apparently dropped mid-getaway.
The culprits attempted to torch their lift basket on the way out but were thwarted by a museum staffer. Moments later, they zipped off on scooters along the Seine, leaving behind smashed glass, stunned security and the lingering question: how do you pull off one of history’s most audacious daylight robberies at the Louvre, during opening hours, no less?
