A glass object that intensified the sun’s rays was the cause of a blaze that left six in hospital in West London, the London Fire Brigade has said. The victims, including three children, all suffered smoke inhalation and were taken to hospital by ambulance after the first floor of the two-storey house on Elderberry Road in Ealing was completely destroyed on Tuesday evening (June 11).
On Wednesday (June 12), the Brigade said part of the ground floor was also damaged in the flames as it revealed the fire was accidentally started by sunlight reflecting off a glass object within the room. In light of the unusual incident, LFB issued a warning about the dangers of fires caused by reflected sunlight.

“These sorts of fires are not as rare as you would think. They can happen all year around, but as we head into summer and the sun gets stronger, it’s really important that reflective items such as mirrors, crystals and glass ornaments are kept out of direct sunlight,” added the spokesperson.
The Brigade was called at around 7pm and the fire was under control by 8:25pm. Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters from Chiswick, Heston, Park Royal and Hammersmith fire stations attended the scene.
