8 jobs you can apply for in Wales and start right now

It’s an uncertain time for the economy as local lockdowns are introduced and the UK braces for a second wave of coronavirus — but companies are still hiring.

Some businesses have fared better than others during the pandemic and even though you might think that opportunities would be few and far between, there are plenty of options available for job seekers.

If you’re looking for a career change or just something to see you through a difficult period, the Welsh job market still has plenty to offer.

Here are some of the jobs you can apply for in Wales right now:

1. Warehouse operatives

Amazon has done a roaring trade recently as more people shop online during the pandemic. The company is looking for people to work in a varied role at its huge Fulfilment Centre in Swansea with overtime available.

2. On-call firefighter

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service is looking for on-call firefighters at 25 of its stations. On-call firefighters respond to fires, road traffic collisions, chemical emergencies and flooding.

They are also expected to inform and educate their local communities and carry out Safe and Well visits to people’s homes. Helping to protect the community they live in, the pay depends on how many hours you are on-call each week.

3. Bike courier

Food delivery company, Just Eat, is looking for bike courier’s in Wrexham for full and part-time roles. All you’ll need is a smart phone and a “reliable push bike,” for a job you can fir around your schedule. Find out more here.

4. Store colleague – Pets at Home

Pets at Home is looking for people to work at a number of its sites in Wales including Bridgend, Haverfordwest, Merthyr Tydfil and Swansea.

You’ll have twelve months of training and the option to specialise in areas such as dog grooming. The minimum number of hours is 20, with the need to be flexible to take on more hours if necessary. Find out more here.

5. Christmas casuals at Royal Mail

With Christmas just around the corner, Royal Mail is doing its yearly recruitment drive for thousands of temporary staff. They’re looking for people to work at the main mail centre as well as the South West Parcel Sorting Centre in Cardiff.

Earlies, lates and night shifts are available and you’ll be unloading and sorting all those extra Christmas cards and presents “so they arrive at their destination safely,” according to the job advert. Find out more here.

6. Barista

People still need their caffeine fix during lockdown – maybe now more than ever.

If you fancy trying your hand at a flat white or mocha then Coffee#1 is hiring. The expanding company said: “You don’t need to be a coffee pro to join us” but they’re looking for enthusiasm and “a thirst for coffee knowledge”. Opportunities are available in outlets in Carmarthen, Penarth, Haverfordwest and Cardigan.

7. Teaching Assistant

Now that schools have returned, opportunities are opening up for teaching assistants and other support staff. A teaching recruitment agency is looking for teaching assistants, learning support assistants and school caretakers in Swansea.

8. Personal trainer

The five-star St David’s Hotel situated in Cardiff Bay is urgently looking for a personal trainer. The space will be given to the successful candidate rent-free, but you’ll need a Level 3 Personal Trainer certification to apply.
