88 nations halt mail deliveries to U.S. over tariffs

88 nations have halted mail and parcel deliveries to the United States following new tariffs imposed by America, and Pakistan is one of those countries that has stopped deliveries. The step was taken after the United States withdrew tax exemptions for small parcels coming into the country, disrupting international postal services severely.

As reported by international media, the suspension has caused over an 80% drop in mail addressed to the U.S. The Universal Postal Union (UPU), a United Nations agency that regulates global postal service, has confirmed the interruption and stated its team is working on a technical fix to reopen mail service.

“An accelerated plan is being crafted to restart delivery to the United States,” UPU Director-General Masahiko Metoki said.

The U.S. government revealed in late July that, from August 29, small packages arriving in the country would no longer be exempt from taxation. In the wake of this revelation, leading postal carriers in nations such as the United Kingdom, France, Germany, India, Italy, Japan, and Australia stated that they would stop accepting mail bound for the U.S.

UPU statistics indicate that August 29 deliveries to the U.S. declined by 81% from the previous week. The suspension applies to full and partial services of international postal operators. Some of the providers hit by the suspension include Germany’s Deutsche Post, the United Kingdom’s Royal Mail, and two Bosnian-Herzegovina operators.

“Postal operators have notified the UPU that they have suspended temporarily some or all services to the United States until a solution is applied,” Metoki further said.

The disruption of mail services reflects increasing tensions regarding trade policies and the ripple effects of tariff maneuvers on international logistics. Although the technical resolution being worked out is designed to restore services seamlessly, numerous firms and individuals who depend on international postal delivery experience considerable delays and uncertainty.

Pakistan and other concerned countries are likely to resume operations after the UPU makes the technical modifications to handle the new tariff regime. The authorities have stressed that the suspension is temporary and largely a reaction to the abrupt modifications in the postal regulations of the United States.

The global community remains on the lookout as the U.S. and concerned nations move towards a concerted approach to reestablish postal connectivity and limit disruption of world mail flow.
