At 11:40 pm on Sunday, April 14, 1912, the Royal Mail Steamer Titanic sideswiped an iceberg while sweeping across the North Atlantic at a speed of about 22 knots, more than 25 mph, on its maiden voyage from Southampton, England, to New York.
