Ballagh Road Newcastle crash victim John Blaney was “quiet, hardworking and popular”

Police have named the man killed in a crash between Newcastle and Annalong yesterday afternoon as John Joseph Blaney.

The 32-year-old died after his Citroen collided with a Skoda Octavia near Bloody Bridge on Ballagh Road shortly after 12.30pm.

He was from the Mearne Road area of Downpatrick.

A former colleague at Royal Mail said: “I am really Lost for words to say. Such a really lovely lad who’s company I was always happy to be in at the many Down GAA games we went to.

“Thinking of Michael, Ann, and all the family at this very sad time.

“He was a quiet, hardworking and popular young man. I worked with him in Royal Mail a few years ago.”

A PSNI spokesperson said two people in the other car “did not sustain any serious injuries as a result of the collision”.

Inspector Johnstone is appealing for anyone who was travelling on the Ballagh Road yesterday afternoon and who witnessed the collision, or anyone who has any dash cam footage of the collision, to contact the Collision Investigation Unit on 101 quoting reference 782 of 19/07/19.

The Ballagh Road has since re-opened to traffic following the collision.

John’s funeral will take place at St Patrick’s in the Parish of Saul and Ballee at 10 on Tuesday. He will be buried in the adjoining cemetery.
