eBay: ‘Rare’ Beatrix Potter Peter Rabbit 50p coin on sale for £6000 for this reason

eBay is a bidding site where shoppers can pick up a cheap bargain as well as splash out on more sought after items. Those looking to buy a commemorative coin can find luck on the website, although some of these coins are selling for much more than face value. Recently, the eBay user “elliolonsdal4” posted a 2017 Peter Rabbit fifty pence piece which had the eye-watering starting price of £6,000. Although the coin was described as “rare”, there is an important reason why shoppers must watch out.

The seller posted the Beatrix Potter Tale of Peter Rabbit 2017 coin online along with two photos of it.

Explaining why the starting price is so high, they said the piece was “rare” and “circulated”.

They added: “The tale of peter rabbit 50p. Dispatched with Royal Mail 1st Class Large Letter.”

Those willing to part with £6,000 to get their hands on the coin will be treated to free Standard Delivery, however the seller will not accept returns.

Although the commemorative coin may be of interest to a number of people, this is does not necessarily mean it is rare or worth as much as the price tag would suggest.

According to the coin website, Change Checker, the fifty pence as a circulating mintage of 19,900,000.

The coin has been ranked as one on the Scarcity Index, which means it is actually classed as common, and not rare.

Beatrix Potter coins were first released in 2016 to mark 150 years since the birth of the children’s author and they proved so popular more have been released each year since.

The coin on offer was designed by Emma Noble and features a drawing of Peter Rabbit in his iconic blue jacket.

Experts at the publication, Spend It? Save It? What Should You Do?, explained that commemorative coins are often very popular, but the one on sale has a valuation of just £4.
