How Grace Kelly’s grandson Pierre Casiraghi swapped Monaco for life on Greta’s eco-friendly yacht

If Prince Harry and wife Meghan are suffering from a case of ‘flygskam’, literally ‘flight shame’ in Greta Thunberg’s native Swedish, after taking four journeys in a private jet in just 11 days, then there’s one European royal who can currently enjoy the moral high ground from the middle of the Atlantic.

Pierre Casiraghi, the 31-year-old nephew of Prince Albert of Monaco and the grandson of late Hollywood icon Grace Kelly, is currently slap-bang in the middle of the Pond, with teenage climate sensation Greta Thunberg and her father Svante among the five people on board.

The keen sailor and environmental supporter is helping Greta make her way to New York for the UN Climate Action Summit in September; the latest tracker on the 60ft yacht Malizia II shows the boat is making good progress.

The latest images posted to the Team Malizia Instagram account show Casiraghi, who wed wife Beatrice, 34, a member of the ancient aristocratic House of Borromeo, in 2015, as a laid-back figure clearly enjoying life on the ocean waves.

An image of the crew, which, alongside Greta and Casiraghi, also includes the Swedish teenager’s father, cameraman Nathan Grossman and sailor Boris Herrmann, uses zero fossil fuels and is nearly half way through the arduous two-week journey.

A competent sailor, the grandson of Princess Grace, answered the call when Greta declared an interest in speaking at the UN conference but said she wouldn’t fly to honour the commitment.

The yacht, which has no toilet facilities and will, by now, be relying on tinned food as fresh produce taken on board runs out, is a far cry from the gilded cradle of Monaco. Sailors rarely brave the Atlantic in August because of hurricane risks but the crew has reported only minor seasickness so far.

When Casiraghi wed Beatrice in 2015, the lavish ceremony took place at Monaco’s Grimaldi Palace and the couple enjoyed a second set of nuptials at the family castle  of Italian heiress Beatrice on the shores of the Lake Maggiore.

The aristocratic couple invited a host of royals and A-listers including Czech model Eva Herzigova to the wedding ceremonies.

It is not clear whether the royal will attend the UN convention when the boat docks in New York.

Greta, who inspired tens of thousands of school students across the world to skip class for a day to protest for faster action against climate change, said she had spent months trying to figure out how to travel to the US without flying on a plane.

The teen will speak at the United Nations Climate Action Summit in New York in September and has plans to stay on the continent, visiting Canada and then Mexico, before heading to Chile in December for the annual UN climate conference.
