Prince Harry doesn’t want son Archie’s nanny to wear uniform, saying ‘she’s not Mary Poppins’

Meghan Markle and Prince Harry don’t want son Archie’s nanny to wear a traditional uniform because she’s not ‘Mary Poppins’, royal expert claims

  • Insider Omid Scobie opened up about Meghan and Harry’s search for a nanny
  • Claims Harry said: ‘This isn’t Mary Poppins, we’re having a normal household’
  • The Sussexes’ new nanny was spotted in plain clothing during their trip to Ibiza
  • Kate, 37, and William, 37, have a Norland nanny who wears traditional uniform

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle reportedly opted against making their nanny wear a uniform during their search for staff, saying their life is not ‘Mary Poppins’.

Royal reporter Omid Scobie opened up about the Duke and Duchess of Sussex’s search for a nanny on Yahoo’s Royal Box this week, and claimed that Harry was unhappy about the idea of ‘a woman in a uniform’.

The couple’s new nanny – whose name is not known – was first spotted with them as they holidayed with baby Archie at Elton John’s house in the south of France last month, wearing plain clothing.

This stands in stark contrast to Prince William and Kate Middleton’s childminder, who is often pictured wearing a traditional Norland uniform on formal occasions.

Speaking on the weekly show, Omid said: ‘One of the things that Harry said was, ‘I don’t want a woman in a uniform around my child. This isn’t Mary Poppins, we’re going to have a normal household’.’

Meanwhile the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, both 37, employ a Norland nanny called Maria who is often seen in a traditional uniform looking after Prince George, 6, Princess Charlotte, 4, and Prince Louis, 1.

Archie’s carer is believed to have been the third nanny hired by the royal couple, after the first nanny was reportedly sacked amid reports she was ‘unprofessional’, while the second one was only employed to work night shifts.

Reports by US magazine Harper’s Bazaar began circling in the middle of June that Harry and Meghan had hired their current nanny, who is said to be British-born.

According to reports Harry and Meghan’s nanny will not live at Frogmore Cottage with the Sussexes, but is believed to be accompanying them on their royal tour next month.

Appearing on the show, social historian Louise Herren explained that it was not clear whether a uniform had been a make-or-break fact for Prince William and Kate.

She revealed: ‘We’ll never know whether [Maria] she’s chosen to wear her uniform or whether she’s been asked to wear her uniform.

‘It’s immaterial, but she’s there in a role and when the press photographs her you can see that she is the nanny.’

Prince Harry was famously very close to his nanny Tiggy Legge-Bourke, who was hired after Prince Charles and Diana split.

Speaking on the weekly show, royal reporter Omid Scobie said: 'One of the things that Harry said was, ‘I don’t want a woman in a uniform around my child. This isn’t Mary Poppins, we’re going to have a normal household'.'

He has remained friendly with Tiggy, who did not wear a uniform while looking after Prince Harry and Prince William.

Tiggy has attended many of the main events in Harry’s life, and is believed to have met Meghan Markle when the two got engaged.

She was also among the few guests known to attend Prince Harry and Meghan’s son Archie’s christening, sparking rumours she could have been chosen as a godmother.
