THE SUMBURGH Head café will re-open its doors on Friday after Katja Stübiger of Katja’s Cakes was appointed to run a pop-up service for the remainder of the season.
The café in the Sumburgh Head Visitor Centre, run by Shetland Amenity Trust, was closed earlier this year after it suffered extensive damage as water leaked in through its curved windows.
The gap in the market during the summer was filled by Katja’s popular Unken Wagen and Stübiger has now been rewarded with a contract.
Trust chair Ruth Mackenzie said: “Katja and her Unken Wagen have been a wonderful asset this season. We have had fantastic feedback from customers and staff alike.”
The café will be open five days a week Wednesdays to Sundays until 6 October.
ROYAL Mail has insisted that it has no plans to move its office to a new location after Post Office Ltd announced earlier this month that it would move its main Lerwick branch on Commercial Street to newsagents Conochies by January next year.
Royal Mail occupies and operates from the same premises at 46 Commercial Street.
A spokesperson said: “Royal Mail can confirm that we have no current plans to move our office to a new location and mail deliveries will continue from our current site in Lerwick as usual for the foreseeable future.”
A follow up question on how this sits with plans by Royal Mail to partly demolish its disused workshop at Garthspool with the aim to retain the steel frame for “future development” remained unanswered.

A TEENAGER from Brae High School is in the running for the young Scots speaker of the year award, which is part of the inaugural Scots Language Awards 2019 due to be held in Glasgow on 27 September.
Dialect speaker Hannah Lisa Laurenson, 16, was named Shetland senior dialect writer of the year 2018 for her story Da Maa’s Eggs.
