Royal Mail staff at Omega join in on walkout over ‘racist’ comment to Muslim worker

STAFF at Royal Mail’s distribution centre at Omega have walked out in solidarity with colleagues in Bootle following a manager’s alleged racist comment.

On Wednesday, more than 50 workers set up a picket line at the Bootle and Seaforth delivery office, after claims that a female manager asked a Muslim post office worker ‘do you like women?’.

The Liverpool Echo reported that the remark was ‘badly received’ and the worker went home ‘upset’.

Colleagues took industrial action which is now entering its third day.

Today, Warrington staff also walked out of the distribution centre on Orion Boulevard.

The Echo reported that Warrington drivers who refused to cross the picket line were suspended by Royal Mail bosses and as a result, other workers walked out in solidarity.

One man at the Omega site said: “More and more offices up and down the country are also walking out.”

A Royal Mail spokesperson said: “We are disappointed that unballoted industrial action is taking place in Warrington.

“We remain committed to resolving our colleagues’ concerns in cooperation with the Communication Workers Union (CWU).

“We sincerely apologise to customers in these areas for any disruption to their mail services. We are making every effort to deliver as much mail as possible.”
