Hull Royal Infirmary to be part of new Channel 5 documentary

The city’s A&E department is set to be at the heart of a new fly-on-the-wall documentary.

Eyes will be firmly fixed on the nurses and doctors at Hull Royal Infirmary while going about their life-saving duties on the programme which will focus on the night shift workers at the hospital.

Staff seemed excited at the prospect of being part of the national TV programme after it was let slip to a patient that the cameras would be paying them a visit next week.

Hull Live understands it will be broadcast on Channel 5 next year and includes clips from what it is really like on the A&E department.

A man, who attended the department at the hospital this week, said: “I was in there getting a blood test because I took a knock at football and went to get a check-up because my chest was hurting.

“As the nurse was taking blood from my veins, she said something along the lines of they were getting the cameras in here soon.

“I said, ‘are you really?’ and I asked what it was for and she said it was for a big documentary about A&E after dark, apparently it’s going to be on Channel 5.”

The hospital confirmed it was in the process of working with a production company to film the series.

A spokeswoman for Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust said: “The trust is working with a TV production company to film a documentary series about the hospital night shift, planned for broadcast in 2020.”
