Kate Middleton reaches for a handshake with soldier as he salutes

Awkward! The moment Kate Middleton reaches to shake hand of a soldier – just as he’s about to salute her

  • The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are currently on a five-day tour of Pakistan
  • Stepping out of a Land Rover in Islamabad, the couple went to greet a soldier
  • Kate stretched for a handshake at the same moment the soldier went to salute

This is the awkward moment that the Duchess of Cambridge was left with an empty, outstretched hand – after attempting to greet a uniformed solider in Islamabad on Tuesday.

Kate, 37, who was joined by her husband Prince William, stepped out of a Land Rover in Islamabad, on their first official day of their royal tour of Pakistan.

Dressed in a glamorous traditional blue kurta and scarf by Maheen Khan, the mother-of-three, appeared amused that the soldier continued his salute while she waited to shake his hand.

The royal, who is usually seamless with following royal protocol, finally got to shake his hand after the soldier realised his mistake, when she then turned to Prince William as they began to exchange pleasantries with the soldier.

Channeling Princess Diana with her outfit choice, Kate swiftly moved past the blunder as she continued the visit to Islamabad Model College for Girls.

The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were given tours of the facilities and spent time posing for photographs with the students, ranging from kindergarten age students to sixth formers.

Their visit which involved learning about the Teach For Pakistan programme, has been designed to champion the importance of quality education, and highlight how girls benefit from pursuing higher education and professional careers.

The couple’s five days in Pakistan is set to follow in the footsteps of Princess Diana’s journey to the nation in 1996.

More than 1,000 Pakistani police officers have been deployed to secure the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge's safety throughout the five-day tour

Following on from the handshake faux pas, Kate and Prince William went on to attend a glittering reception in Pakistan’s capital.

The Duchess beamed in a bottle green evening gown, as the Duke of Cambridge appeared dapper in a Sherwani while highlighting the country’s development in a keynote speech.

The tour which comes 13 years after the last royal visit, was arranged at request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office, at a time of ongoing tensions between Pakistan and India over the disputed region of Kashmir.

More than 1,000 Pakistani police officers have been deployed to secure the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s safety during their travels across the country.

The couple are set to have a busy week of engagements, however the palace has made the decision to keep details of their schedule undisclosed until the day due to security concerns.
