Saltcoats street locked down and buildings evacuated after ‘suspicious package’ fears

COPS locked down an area near a Post Office in Saltcoats earlier after reports of a suspicious package.

Emergency crews raced to Chapelwell Street just before 6pm and evacuated nearby buildings.

A number of officers were seen carrying out an investigation near to a Post Office.

Locals were told to stay indoors and away from the area.

Fire engines and ambulances were also spotted at the scene.

On person wrote on Facebook: “Chapelwell Street all shut off!!

“Bomb scare in the Post Office.”

“Crown Inn etc has been evacuated.”

 

Another said: “Bomb scare in Saltcoats tonight.”

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We received a report of a suspicious package at a Royal Mail delivery office in Chapelwell Street, Saltcoats, around 5.45pm on Thursday 17 October 2019.

“Officers attended and the package was found to be non-suspicious.”
