Mail delivery times in Gibraltar are to be reduced, says the Government, following a deal its struck with Royal Mail.

As part of Brexit contingency planning, the Government has arranged for all incoming post office mail and parcels to arrive on the Rock via a direct flight from London, which should save a day of transit time.

The mail in these bags would normally go through three countries, before making it to Gibraltar. On Tuesday, it landed on the Rock directly from London. This is the first delivery of many, in a bid to prevent potential Brexit threats to mail delivery.

Previously, Gibraltar-bound post had substantially travelled before reaching its destination, flying from London to Malaga, through Dublin, and then hitting the road before reaching the Rock. This is often several hundred kilos of mail daily.

The Postal Services Minister says the new means of receiving mail will increase operational efficiency at the Post office and reduce delivery times by cutting out a day of transit for no extra cost.
