Qld rapist attacks during royal wedding

A notorious sex offender who raped a fellow prisoner while watching Prince Harry wed Meghan Markle has broken down during sentencing in a Brisbane court.

Troy Allan Burley, 41, was convicted of raping and sexually assaulting the inmate at the Wolston Correctional Centre starting in May 2018.

His victim was 21 and it was his first time behind bars.

He told the court he was terrified of Burley and there were nights when he cried himself to sleep.

“The impact is traumatic and widespread. I was extremely trapped in the situation that I did not know how to get out of,” he said in a victim impact statement read to the court.

“I was used as a sex object and exploited. I have never felt so scared of anyone as I was him.

“His actions were calculated, predatory and violent and will leave an everlasting indent on me for the rest of my life.”

Burley controlled all aspects of his victim’s life and the emotional scars would last forever, the court heard.

Dubbed the “railway rapist”, Burley sobbed as Judge Jennifer Rosengren reviewed his violent and terrifying history of attacks on four women in 1997.

Burley attacked four strangers by grabbing them from behind, covering their faces and taunting them during the attack.

He also used a knife and threatened to kill his victims if they went to police.

He demanded to know where his victims lived and if they had children because he would “enjoy having sex with little girls”.

“They were very degrading, terrible sexual acts,” Judge Rosengren.

Crown prosecutor Jacqueline Ball noted several similarities between those attacks and his rape of the inmate including biting, forced oral sex and masturbation.

Burley has spent all but 13 months of his adult life in custody and has no contact with his family or children, the court was told.

The sentencing in Brisbane District Court was adjourned until next Thursday.
