  • A decision on the length of the delay is expected next week

Production of three million commemorative Brexit Day coins due to be released next week have been ‘paused’ after the EU signaled it would once again delay the UK’s departure.

The Treasury confirmed that manufacture of the 50p pieces had been placed in hiatus despite Chancellor Sajid Javid’s desire to release them into circulation next week.

The EU revealed this morning that it has agreed to a further Brexit delay past October 31, but has yet to confirm exactly how long it will be.

A decision is expected early next week.

A Treasury spokesman said: ‘We have paused production of the Brexit coin and will take a final decision in due course.’

The coin will feature the date the UK is set to leave the EU as well as the inscription: ‘Peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations’

Following the delay of the UK's exit in March Mr Javid asked officials if the coins could be made en masse in time for October

The coins were originally supposed to have the 29 March 2019 date inscribed on them.

Following the delay of the UK’s exit Mr Javid asked officials if the coins could be made en masse in time for October.

The Treasury announced earlier this month that the newest version had received approval by the Queen’s Privy Council of ministers.

Three million were due to be released on October 31, with a further 10 million being produced later in the year.

Commemorative coins have also been minted in silver and gold proof versions.

Those interested in the coins can register on the Royal Mint website.

In 1973 a 50p coin was released when the UK joined the European Economic Community and the Royal Mint is known to produce coins on major national occasions.
