In 2003, when she was just a teenager, she was attacked while surfing and her left arm was bitten off.

While out trying to catch the perfect wave with her best friend Alana Blanchard and her friend’s father and brother, Hamilton was attacked by a 14-foot tiger shark.

Her left arm was severed just below her shoulder. The Blanchards helped her paddle back to shore and she was rushed to a local hospital.

The Hawaiian born surfer not only survived the attack, she also refused to let fear rule her life and was back out in the water three to four weeks later.

Following the attack, she wrote about her experience in the 2004 autobiography.

In April 2011, a feature film Soul Surfer, starring AnnaSophia Robb and Helena Hunt, based on Bethany’s life was released.
