Princess Michael joined the Royal Family when she married Prince Michael of Kent, the Queen’s first cousin. He was the seventh-in-line to the throne at birth, but now sits at 48th. He met Baroness Marie Christine von Reibnitz – as she was then known as – when she was working in the UK.
She was married to another Englishman called Thomas Troubrdige in 1971 for a brief period, but they divorced so she could marry Prince Michael.
She was interviewed by Roy Plomley in a 1984 episode of BBC Radio 4’s ‘Desert Island Discs’, where she admitted she is often sent some “delicious mail”.
He said: “You get mixed up in silly stunts, don’t you?
“There was one where a man dressed up as a wolf just to get newspaper publicity. That kind of irresponsible behaviour can’t happen very often.”
She responded: “Yes but the letters one gets are so delicious, it almost makes it alright. I never forget one letter I had after the so-called wolf episode which was from a lovely lady.
“She wrote, ‘quite honestly I wouldn’t be upset if I were you, because for a married woman of your age to still be attractive to wolves is quite something in itself!’
“Cheered me up no end.”
At the time of the interview, Princess Michael had two young children – Lord Frederick Windsor and Lady Gabriella Windsor, who married earlier this year and became Lady Gabriella Kingston.

Mr Plomley said: “Really? You are a great cat lady. You love cats.”
She said: “Yes I love cats, I love dogs, I love all animals – anything on four legs with fur on more or less qualifies.”
Princess Michael then admitted she had nine cats the time of the interview, although only three travel backwards and forwards with her to London.
Princess Michael was also at the heart of scandal when she and Prince Michael were trying to marry because not only was she a Catholic, but she had to get her previous marriage ecclesiastically annulled in 1978 by the Pope.
She is known to live in Kensington Palace estate still with her husband, but often bickered with Princess Diana and Princess Anne.
The Queen’s daughter labelled her “Princess Pushy”, while Diana used to play tricks on her and her cats to aggravate Princess Michael.
Prince Michael also represents the Queen at some Commonwealth functions and occasionally presents television documentary based on europe’s royal families.
