It used to be students leading the protests at university campuses, campaigning for peace and love. Today it is academics demanding preservation of their gold-plated pensions.
Passions are nevertheless running high on campus, with lecturers and support staff at 60 universities walking out on an eight-day strike.
More than a million students will have had their classes cancelled by the action, which has been triggered by a row over increased pensions costs as well as disputes over salaries and working conditions.
