Helen Glover and Steve Backshall celebrate the arrival of baby twins

Cornwall’s Olympic gold medallist Helen Glover has given birth to twins.

The 33-year-old gave birth to her first child with presenter husband Steve Backshall, Logan James David Backshall, last year.

The pair, who married at Prussia Cove in 2016, had previously announced that they were expecting twins.

But, sadly, it was later confirmed that one of the twins had been lost during the pregnancy.

Helen announced the safe arrival of her baby twins on Twitter today with an adorable photo of her newborn son and daughter’s feet.

“We’re gonna need a bigger boat,” joked the rower.

She continued: “Welcome to the world little ones. Your big brother is already setting the tips for surviving 3 under 2 on a postcard please .”

The couple told Hello magazine: “We are so excited to welcome the babies to our family! It is going to be a learning curve for us juggling the two of them and Logan, but we are already loving journey.”

The pair announced they were expecting at the Mirror’s Animal Hero Awards last year.

While presenting an award, Helen said: “I’m definitely blaming my pregnancy hormones for this, but I’ve been crying about this story all day.”

The pair met in 2014 on Sports Relief and they decided to start a family after their training schedules were relaxed following their sporting efforts.

Last year, the Penzance-born Olympian visited her golden postbox with her newborn baby boy.

Writing on Twitter this morning, Glover said: “Six years ago today #heatherstanning and I won the first @teamgb gold of #London2012.

“Tonight I’ll be exchanging national anthems for nappy changes.. and I wouldn’t have it any other way! Logan’s first trip to the gold post box to celebrate @SteveBackshall.”

The Royal Mail post box on Quay Street in Penzance was painted gold in 2012 in honour of Glover for her achievement in rowing.

Every time a British athlete wins a gold medal in the Olympics or Paralympics, the Royal Mail paints a post box gold in their home town.

Helen and her rowing partner Heather Stanning won Britain’s first gold medal at the London Olympics in 2012, and in Rio de Janeiro in 2016 they took gold again, becoming the first British female rowers to defend their Olympic crown.
