Brexit latest: Royal Mint launch rare £1,000 GOLD Brexit coin to go on sale tomorrow | Politics | News

Three versions of the Brexit coin will go on sale from tomorrow in the hours before the historic day finally takes place. The design features the words: “Peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations.” They also feature the date of January 31, with only 1,500 gold versions going on sale.

Some 47,000 silver versions are available for the price of £60 and uncirculated coins can be purchased for £10.

Previous designs of the past dates of March 29 and October 31 were scrapped.

The coins come in a card that reads: “A vote to leave and a new era.”

Up to three million Brexit coins will enter banks, Post Offices and shops nationwide, the Mail Online reports.

A further seven million will enter circulation later in the year.

This could hinder collectors’ attempts at making any cash on them.

It comes as Lib Dem leader Ed Davey appeared on Good Morning Britain today and suggested Brexit voters were “stupid” after giving his views on the new Brexit coin.

Susanna Reid this morning questioned acting Lib Dem co-leader Sir Ed whether he would do the same. Sir Ed replied he would be selling his Brexit 50p to a Brexiteer for £1.

After a pause, Ms Reid questioned whether the Liberal Democrat was implying Brexiteers were stupid.

Ms Reid said: “A lot of people are saying, Remainers dubbed Remoaners as we know.

Ms Reid responded: “Right, are you suggesting that Brexiteers are stupid?”

Mr Shephard added: “Or are you suggesting that Brexit 50ps are going to be worth more now that we have left the European Union?”

Sir Ed replied: “No I am not saying that, far from it.

“The worry is the pound will devalue a little bit and we will see prices go up and it will be worth less, unfortunately.

“I was on a radio programme with a Brexit MEP who was desperate to get her hands on these Brexit 50ps.

“So I said I would sell it to her for a £1.”

Mr Shephard then said: “They are going to become collector’s items and worth a lot more than you think.

“That is Brexit for you.”

Sir Ed was not the only person to condemn the coins on TV.

Remainer Yasmin Alibhai-Brown hit out at the announcement a commemorative coin will brought into circulation on the Jeremy Vine show, adding she found it “humiliating” for those who voted to remain in the major 2016 ballot.

Clashing with fellow panellist Angela Epstein, she said: “Do not humiliate the losers and that is what’s happening.”

Hitting out at those who voted to leave, Alibhai-Brown continued: “And it’s very interesting. You won and you’re still this cross and you still need to rub our noses in it?”

Defending the decision, Epstein replied: “It’s not rubbing your noses in it – it’s commemorating a decisive election…”

Britain will leave the EU tomorrow.
