Commemorative gold Brexit 50p coins sell out by lunchtime even though they are priced at £945 each

Solid-gold Brexit coins priced at £945 each sold out by lunch time today after going on sale this morning.

The commemorative coins – sold by the Royal Mint – were part of a limited edition of 1,500. 

Brexiteers looking for memorabilia faced a queuing system to access the Royal Mint’s website today.

A two-piece coin set, priced at £30, has also sold out after 5,000 units were made. 

It features a 50p from 1973 marking the year Britain joined the European Economic Community and another 50p marking the UK’s departure from the EU. 

Each shopper could only buy three of the silver coins – sold for £60 – after 47,000 were produced, The Daily Telegraph reported.

Sajid Javid, the Chancellor, unveiled the new Brexit 50p last week. It will enter circulation on Friday January 31

The coins – including the £10 ‘brilliant’ coin – are to be shipped out within ten working days.

Meanwhile, approximately three million commemorative Brexit 50p coins are due to begin entering circulation today as part of efforts to formally mark the UK’s departure from the EU.

The coins, bearing the words ‘peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations’ as well as the Brexit date of January 31, 2020, have sparked a furious backlash among pro-EU campaigners.

With just hours to go until the country leaves the European Union, Britons up and down the country are preparing to celebrate in style – with street parties and pub crawls organised to mark the historic occasion this evening

In London, hundreds are expected to gather in Parliament Square this evening for a a ‘once-in-a-lifetime’ party. Proceedings will start at 9pm and end shortly after the UK leaves the EU at 11pm (pictured, some have already started to arrive)

Lord Adonis, a Labour peer who has consistently fought to reverse Brexit, tweeted: ‘I am never using or accepting this coin.’

Meanwhile, Alastair Campbell, Tony Blair’s former spin doctor, echoed a similar sentiment.

He said he will ask shops for alternatives to the coin if he is handed one in the future.
