Post deliveries suspended in Estuary Road, Sheerness, after dog attacks mail worker

Residents have been told their post deliveries have been suspended after a dog attacked a mail worker.

Royal Mail has written to households in Estuary Road, Sheerness to tell them the firm has suspended deliveries.

The note explains a worker had been attacked while delivering in the area.

It added that arrangements had been made for post to be delivered to the sorting office in Broadway, Sheerness where people will have to collect their letters in person.

The situation will remain until the round is deemed safe.

Butch Stanton, who lives in the road, said: “There’s a lot of old people around there. We have to go and get our post every day now.

“It’s easy for me but there’s old people there who might be waiting for letters from the hospital.

“The Royal Mail should be taking this up with the dog owner and not everybody in the street.

“I don’t understand why they stopped the post for the rest of the street.

“They didn’t say how long it’s got to go on for.

“What’s getting me is the bin collectors, milkmen and paper boys still have to go down there. They don’t stop because of the dogs.”

A similar incident is believed to have taken place last year. The dog is thought to have been a rottweiler.

A Royal Mail spokesman said: “A temporary delivery suspension is in place in Estuary Road, Sheerness, to ensure the safety of delivery staff due to a dog being loose in the street.

“We have notified all impacted residents and are waiting for a response from the owners to confirm what actions they have put in place to prevent the dog from getting loose in future.

“The incident has been reported to the local police and dog warden.”

A Swale council spokesman said they were aware of the report and would visit the property to “discuss ways the dog can be constrained within the home”.

The attack happened at 12.15pm on Friday, January 31. Police are investigating.
