New, limited edition coins are now being released on a regular basis, with recent eye-catching designs including Peter Rabbit and Paddington Bear.
The Royal Mint is now set to release three new 50p coins featuring dinosaurs – something which hasn’t been done before.
Three new dinosaur coins
The coins feature three different dinosaurs – the Hylaeosaurus, Megalosaurus, and the Iguanodon.
These coins have been designed by palaeontologists at the Natural History Museum in order to create a reconstruction of the dinosaurs and the environment that they lived in for over 160million years.
However, the coins are only being released as a collector’s item, so it is quite unlikely that they’ll end up in your spare change.
Where can I find the dinosaur coins?
You can now buy the Megalosaurus coin on the Royal Mint website, with the other two coins launching in March and April.

How much do they cost?
The prices start at £10 for the brilliant uncirculated coin, which will be available in an unlimited quantity.
Brilliant uncirculated coins are of a higher standard than circulating and bullion coins, and the machines used to strike these coins are polished and finished by hand.
The Royal Mint is also releasing 50,000 coloured versions of the coin which will cost £20 each, and for the first time ever, will feature augmented reality technology. This means that coin owners who have downloaded the free Royal Mint Activate app can scan the coin and see facts and diagrams about the dinosaur itself.
You can also purchase a silver proof coin for £60, a silver proof coloured version for £65, and a gold coin for a staggering £945.
