Boris Johnson announces lockdown to stop coronavirus

The country will go into lockdown after people failed to heed social distancing advice.

The Prime Minister is addressing the nation tonight, although his statement was not broadcast live.

If too many people become seriously unwell at one time, the NHS will be unable to handle it, he said. It’s vital to slow the spread of the disease.

You will only be allowed to leave your house for:

Shopping – as little as possible

Medical reasons

Excercise ONCE a day

Travel to work IF you are a key worker or it is ‘absolutely necessary’

If you are a carer for someone vulnerable

If you don’t follow the powers, the police will have the power to enforce them.

They will be able to issue fines for non-compliance.

ALL shops selling non-essential items will be shut.

Even places of worships will be closed. All social events including weddings are banned.

Funerals, however, have not been banned but there will likely be restrictions on attendance.

These measures will be reviewed in three weeks.
