Although Boris Johnson has demanded that Britons only leave their homes when they are buying essential items or exercising due to coronavirus, it has been revealed that the postal service will continue. In a statement, the company said: “The postal service is a key part of the UK’s infrastructure.

“The delivery of parcels and letters is a way of keeping the country together, businesses operating, and helping many people who may not have the option to leave their homes.

“We continue to work hard to collect, process and deliver as much mail and parcels as possible in difficult circumstances.

“We will continue providing the best delivery service for you and protect the health of our people, and our customers.

“We have provided guidance to our people to help prevent the spread of any infection.

“We are doing so in line with preventative guidance from Public Health Authority.

“We have also made a series of adjustments to our parcel handling procedures.

“We are keeping our ways of working under continuous review.”

However, the decision to keep the postal service running as normal has sparked backlash from some social media users believe the postmen and women up and down the country should also be remaining at home rather than delivering the nation’s post.

One Twitter user said: “It’s like Royal Mail hasn’t heard of coronavirus yet and it is business as usual every morning.

Although the employees of Royal Mail delivering the post may be able to social distance, it could be very difficult for the people in the sorting offices to do the same.

Last week a coronavirus case was confirmed at the Oxfordshire Royal Mail office.

The company said they did clean the facility in line with the guidance from Public Health England.”

Royal Mail has said that in order to protect both its employees and customers, they are temporarily not handing over any hand-held devices to customers.

The Government has currently given the Royal Mail key worker status, which allows their children to attend school.

The company said: “This underlines the importance of Royal Mail to UK society.”
