A royal fan has imagined what senior royals might look like as members of the opposite sex.

Instagram account @dianafanatic, which is run by an anonymous Spanish user, used smartphone app FaceApp to morph the faces of royals including the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and the Duke and Duchess of Sussex and shared the results online.

The edited photos proved divisive with followers, with critics claiming they were ‘too weird’ to look at. However others saw the lighter side and joked Prince William looks ‘more attractive’ as a woman.

One cheeky follower even went so far as to make up names for the royal alter-egos, suggesting Harry’s could be known as ‘Harley’.

One posted: ‘This is great!! Thanks for the laugh!’ Another wrote: ‘Funny… Wow kate looks handsome as a man.’

Others claimed it helped highlight the family resemblance between Princess Diana and her sons, with one posting: ‘Diana looks like Harry as a Male even though William has her whole face.’

What is FaceApp?

FaceApp is a photo-morphing app that uses what it calls artificial intelligence and neural face transformations to make alterations to faces.

The app can use photos from your library or you can snap a photo within the app.

The free service uses artificial intelligence to edit a picture in your phone gallery and transforms the image into someone double or triple your age.

It can also change your hair colour, allow you to see what you look like with a beard and even look younger.

FaceApp is a photo-morphing app that allows the user to transform faces captured on camera using a range of filters.

The developers describe the process as using ‘artificial intelligence’ and ‘neural face transformations’.

Although it was first released in 2017, FaceApp gained popularity last year thanks to the #faceappchallenge, which saw celebrities and social media user use the ageing setting on the app to imagine what they might look like in the later years of their life.

Other features allow the user to change an individual’s hair colour, facial hair or even make he or she look younger.

For the royal photos, @dianafanatic used a setting that allows the user to swap the individual’s gender.

There have been concerns raised over the security risks of the app, which requires access to a user’s camera roll.

FaceApp is also allowed to use your name, username ‘or any likeness provided’ in any media format without compensation and you won’t have any ability to take it down or complain about it, reports claim.

It also will not compensate you for this material and it will retain the image long after you’ve deleted the app.
