Major disruption to postal services as roof collapses at Royal Mail centre

Households across Burton and Derbyshire could see “major disruption” to their post today after a roof “gave way” at a Royal Mail centre.

Following the heavy rainfall on Wednesday, June 17, the Royal Mail centre in Padge Road, Beeston, was evacuated.

According to mail workers, there will be disruption to services in Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire today, Thursday, June 18, as a result of flooding.

There have been reports of no post in Burton, which has a Derbyshire postcode, Hilton and Repton.

Mark Harper, a Royal Mail worker from Beeston who is also acting regional secretary for Communication Workers Union told Nottinghamshire Live: “The mail centre was flooded last night and at the moment the mail is being diverted to Sheffield and Peterborough.

“I’m down here this morning as we test the machinery and try to get things back up and running.

“It’s going to cause major disruption today.

“We’re hoping to get people perhaps back working on the late shift but without a doubt posties won’t out in the area this morning.

“Anyone in will be concentrating on getting Nottingham mail out, but that will be tomorrow.”

According to Mr Harper, the centre is responsible for distributing mail across both Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire.

He said: “It’s causing massive disruption across the service today, we do all mail for Nottinghamshire and Derbyshire.

“The centre has always has issues with its roof since it was built. Engineers are here testing machines and we hope to be doing inward mail soon.”

A Royal Mail Spokesperson said: “Mail deliveries in Beeston, have been temporarily disrupted because of damage to the Mail Centre following flooding.

“The customer service point is operating as normal and there is no impact on collection of mail. 

“We are doing everything we can to resume a normal delivery service.

“Managers are currently carrying out a risk assessment.

“We thank customers for their patience and apologise to for any inconvenience.”
