Liverpool FC fans in Ormskirk sent Hillsborough hate mail after putting flags up

Liverpool FC fans were left sickened after disgusting hate mail with photos of the Hillsborough disaster was posted through their doors.

At least two households around Ormskirk received the vile messages seemingly in response to displaying Liverpool flags outside their homes.

The letters, which were stamped and sent through the post contained four photographs from the disaster accompanied by the words “DIE SCOUSE B******S! DIE!”.

It also stated “F*** OFF BACK TO LIVERPOOL” and included a hand-drawn smiley face next alongside the words “HA HA HA”

Aughton residents Sean and Helen Flaherty were among those to receive the post and say at least one other person in Ormskirk says they have received an identical letter.

Sean is a Royal Mail driver and says the letter was stamped at the Warrington mail centre, which covers the area around their homes.

He said: “I was at work on Friday and my wife phoned me to say that this letter had turned up and sent me a photo of it.

“I just told her straight away to get it bagged up and taken to the police.

“We took it down to the police and they didn’t seem too enthused but said they would call us back with a crime number.”

Sean, 51, continued: “It’s sickening. I felt sorry for my wife opening it because she was really taken aback.

“This is the mindset of someone who’s doing it. It’s absolutely sick.

Despite being horrified by the letter, Sean, who has lived in Aughton his whole life, says he won’t be deterred by what happened.

“I’ve only got one flag up because my wife didn’t want the other up but it’s going up this weekend.

“I think that it’s someone who needs help. No football supporter would think like that, it doesn’t matter who you support.”

A spokesperson for Lancashire Police confirmed that the letters are being investigated. He said: “A member of the public attended Ormskirk Police Station just before 12pm on July 10 to report an incident of malicious communication. We are investigating the matter.”
