Royal Mail office at Dorcan closed and deliveries missed after confirmed Covid-19 case

THE Royal Mail delivery office in Dorcan has been closed after a worker tested positive for Covid-19.

Deliveries around Swindon were missed yesterday – and could be again today – as a result.

The company confirmed part of the site, where around 1,000 staff are based, had been shut for a deep clean. It said the enquiry office remained open.

The Adver was tipped off by an anonymous worker, who said they were worried over a lack of social distancing at the delivery office.

That was something Royal Mail denied, saying all of the correct measures are in place for the safety of staff and customers.

A spokesperson said yesterday: “Following a positive test for coronavirus at the Swindon Delivery Office, we have closed the office today as a precautionary measure.

“During this time we have carried out an enhanced clean of the building. We are working to keep disruption to mail deliveries to a minimum as we address the concerns of our colleagues.

“Throughout this crisis, every decision we make puts the health of our people and customers first. We have put in place a range of preventive measures to protect both our customers and our colleagues.

“As well as encouraging good hand hygiene, standard ways of working have been revised to ensure that colleagues stay two metres apart at all times.

“All staff have been briefed about the social distancing measures jointly agreed by local management and the communications workers union .

“This has been supplemented with visible reminders such as posters and one-way floor markings.

“In addition there is only one person permitted in a Royal Mail delivery vehicle at any one time.”

It is not clear when the delivery office will reopen.

The postcodes affected are SN1-3, SN6, SN25, SN26 and SN38.
