£6 million Berkshire home is most expensive sold during lockdown despite massive drop in sales

Million pound Berkshire homes were still changing hands at the height of lockdown – including one which sold for an incredible £6 million.

The coronavirus outbreak has had a massive effect on the housing market, and statistics from the Land Registry show an enormous drop in sales between the start of lockdown in March.

In January 2020, Berkshire saw 895 sales and in February, there were 804.

That fell to 710 in March, 270 in April, just 88 in May.

The data is not complete for June, but just 15 sales were recorded at the time of writing.

Despite the chaos caused by the pandemic, Ascot remained a desirable place to buy in with two homes selling for big money during the lockdown.

The most expensive was in St George’s Lane, which sold for £6 million in May while another eight bedroom home in Church Lane, sold for £4.35 million in mid-May.

Elsewhere in the Royal Borough of Windsor & Maidenhead in May, a home in Terrys Lane in Cookham sold for £3.75 million.

Big sales also took place in West Berkshire, where a home in Newbury sold for £2.6 million in April and another home sold for £1.175 million.

Wokingham and Reading both saw million pound plus sales, despite the lockdown restrictions.

It wasn’t just huge homes in exclusive parts of the county – much smaller homes were also changing hands.

The lease on a flat in Blewburton Way in Bracknell sold for just £146,000, and another lease in Whitby Court, Caversham, sold for just £98,000.

It is still possible to get on the ladder in the Royal Borough for less than £200,000, with the lease on a flat in Cherry Way in Horton selling for £180,000.

Across the country there were 44,920 home sales registered from mid-March to the end of June.

Some sales from the period may not be listed yet.

There were just 770 sales in June 2020 compared to 21,700 in June 2019.

In March, the government issued guidance advising people to delay their sales if possible.

Despite the pandemic, there was still time for some massive sales in Kensington and Chelsea. One house sold for £17.8 million in April, and another for £17.5 million in May.

Bargain hunters could look at Burnley in Lancashire, where a terraced home sold for £15,000.
