The Wiltshire town is already on the Government’s coronavirus watchlist after a spike in cases.

A Tesco spokesperson said: “We have introduced extensive measures across all of our stores to help keep everyone safe, including protective screens at every checkout, social distancing signage and regular deep cleaning.”

It comes after about 51 staff at an Iceland warehouse in Swindon tested positive for coronavirus.

A further 3 crew members at the town’s fire station were also found to have the disease.

And Honda and Royal Mail depots also suffered “small outbreaks” as a result of lockdown being eased, officials warned.

It comes as health officials in Birmingham are also scrambling to trace 70 customers after a coronavirus outbreak linked to a pub BBQ in Birmingham.

The Soho Foundry in Smethwick, West Mids., was forced to temporarily close after three people tested positive for Covid-19.

A spokesperson for Swindon Borough Council’s Public Health department said: “We are aware of the very small number of Covid-19 cases affecting staff at the Tesco store.

“Our Public Health team is working closely with Tesco and colleagues in Public Health England.

“All staff affected are self-isolating in accordance with government guidance.”
