Covid-19 outbreak at Royal Mail sorting office

A coronavirus outbreak at a Greater Manchester Royal Mail sorting office has left posties at recovering at home.

In the last week alone, ‘a number of employees’ at the Bury Delivery Office in Wellington Street tested positive for the virus and were sent home to recuperate, Royal Mail has revealed.

Since the positive tests, Royal Mail says it has carried out a ‘full, enhanced clean of the building’, though the office currently remains open on a daily basis.

The positive Covid-19 cases at Bury Delivery Office were confirmed by Royal Mail after concerns that residents have not been receiving their post.

A Royal Mail spokesperson told the Manchester Evening News : “Royal Mail takes the health and safety of its colleagues, its customers and the local communities in which we operate very seriously.

“In the last week, a number of our colleagues at our Bury Delivery Office tested positive for coronavirus. They are now at home recuperating and we wish them a speedy recovery.

“During this time, we have carried out a full, enhanced clean of the building as a precautionary measure. The Bury Delivery Office remains open as normal.”

Royal Mail added that it has put in place measures to make deliveries safer, including social-distancing measures for parcel deliveries, contact-free delivery and no hand-held signature devices.

Employees are also required to stay two metres apart in offices, which now follow one-way systems, and there is now only one person per delivery van, said Royal Mail.

The Manchester Evening News has asked Royal Mail to confirm how many people at the delivery office tested positive of coronavirus over the last week.
