Collector piled home, flat and garages with 60,000 items worth £4m

A £4M treasure trove of 60,000 items has been found crammed into a three-bed terraced house, one-bed flat, two garages and 24 wheelie bins.

Most of the collection — stacked floor to ceiling in every room of the properties — was unopened parcels delivered over 18 years to a man dubbed ‘Britain’s biggest hoarder’.

It was so vast the owner, a 44-year-old bachelor who died suddenly this year, was forced to move into a bed and breakfast in 2019 because he ran out of room for even himself.

Neighbours said a Royal Mail van filled with parcels arrived at the home in Nottingham every week without fail.

Rarities: Beatles memorabilia

A team of eight men spent 180 hours over six weeks removing the items after being called to clear the properties by the hoarder’s brother.

He had no idea of the scale of his sibling’s collection, an unnamed IT worker who bought it all to fund his retirement, said auctioneer Terry Woodcock.

All 18 workers at Unique Auctions, in Lincoln, who will sell 3,000 lots, spent a month unwrapping packages.

Inside they found thousands of items of Beatles memorabilia — including a rare Hard Day’s Night LP signed by the Fab Four worth £4,000 — signed photos and letters relating to JFK, Winston Churchill, and Elvis Presley, 6,000 vintage comics, ‘space race’ souvenirs and 12 Rickenbacker guitars, worth £10,000 each.

‘This collection is beyond belief,’ said Mr Woodcock. ‘He didn’t buy rubbish, a lot of it was top quality stuff. After he passed away, his brother’s wanted to send it all to landfill. Luckily he didn’t.’

The sale will take place between October 22 and 25.
