Reason to be optimistic about vaccine, says scientist

Professor Wendy Barclay from Imperial College London said there was still reason to be optimistic about a vaccine.

She told Times Radio: “I think that we can still continue to be optimistic about vaccines because vaccines will work in a different way.

“What we’re measuring at the moment is the way that our bodies immune response reacts to the virus infecting us.

“But when we immunise with vaccines – particularly the new generation of vaccines that have been developed and put forward into trials for Sars-CoV-2 – the virus that causes Covid – they work in quite different ways and they might make an immune response which is much more long lasting than natural infection. So we have to keep optimistic about that.”

Boots to unveil in-store rapid Covid-19 testing service

Boots is set to unveil a new coronavirus testing service it says can return results from swab tests in just 12 minutes.

The pharmacy chain said the LumiraDx devices, which are able to quickly process swab tests to give customers same-day results, will be rolled out in selected stores over the next few weeks.

Boots has also launched a 48-hour testing service which is currently available in 10 stores across London, Birmingham, Manchester, Edinburgh and Glasgow, with plans to extend the programme to more than 50 outlets across the nation.

The service is available as a private pre-flight test for customers who require one before travelling abroad, or as a solution for those who would prefer peace of mind before seeing friends and family.

The in-store service will cost £120 per test.
