Star Trek: UK’s Royal Mail Releases New Stamp Set

New stamps from the Royal Mail will pay homage to Star Trek with many of the iconic characters illustrated to resemble a realistic piece of fine art.

The Royal Mail has just debuted official Star Trek stamps.

The Star Trek stamps — illustrated by Freya Betts — feature characters from a number of Star Trek adaptations. These characters include Benjamin Sisko from Deep Space Nine, Jean-Luc Picard from The Next Generation, Kathryn Janeway from Voyager and Spock and Enterprise captain James Tiberius Kirk from The Original Series.

Betts was given imagery for each character to make the process easier; without background references, however, she had to rely on her own creativity to create the galactic backdrops. At the time of release, the stamps will be the smallest print of Betts’ art. Nonetheless, she did not find the endeavor challenging. She had worked “at a large size so that every detail was still accounted for,” though she was interested in seeing how those details translated after printing.

The job was particularly attractive to Betts, who grew up watching The Original Series with her father and who was able to combine her passions for film and art.

The Star Trek stamps will be available for purchase on Nov. 13.
