Was your favourite local business voted a High Street Hero? See the full list for every Scottish region here

HEROIC efforts which provided lifelines to communities across Scotland as the coronavirus pandemic took hold are today being honoured.

A convenience store which opened around the clock, volunteers who provided thousands of meals to the over-70s and an organisation which supplied hundreds of key workers with bicycles are among those celebrated in the Scotland Loves Local High Street Heroes Awards.

They recognise businesses, groups and individuals who have worked tirelessly to support their communities and customers at a time when they have never been needed more.

Regional champions have been named in each of Scotland’s 32 local authority areas – alongside others highly commended – after more than 1,200 award nominations were received for about 600 people.

Scotland’s Communities Secretary, Aileen Campbell, has thanked each of them for their efforts in a message to readers of The Herald.

Among the regional champions was convenience store Brownlie’s of Biggar, awarded the honour in South Lanarkshire.

HeraldScotland:

For three-and-a-half months, owners Donna and Bruce Morgan led their team as they opened 24/7 to both meet intense demand for home deliveries, but also ensure they were there for key workers.

Customers said: “They’ve made sure no-one has gone without. Brownlie’s has been a complete lifeline.”

Reacting to their award, Bruce said: “It’s nice to be recognised. It’s been a hard time for everybody – not just us. We’re proud to be part of the community – and if there’s anything positive that can come out of the pandemic it’s that it has brought the community together.”

Strong community service was also the focus of Colin Wilson, who ran Castle Douglas Post Office in Dumfries and Galloway single-handedly for 13 weeks.

HeraldScotland:

“To be able to keep families in touch with each other with cards and gifts through the post during the pandemic was really satisfying,” he said. “Allowing businesses to continue to trade with online orders through the postal system means our high street continues to prosper with no shop closures.”

In Edinburgh, the regional champion award went to The Bike Station, whose team provided free recycled bikes – plus a helmet, lock and lights – to more than 200 key workers. They run a similar operation in Perth.

Chief executive Sasha Taylor says she’s proud they have been able to make a difference and added: “We know from our customers and Hero Bike recipients that in some cases, their bikes were a lifeline for them. I’m humbled by the appreciation, encouragement and support we’ve received.”

#FeldyRoo, a remarkable voluntary operation which delivered almost 40,000 meals to the over-70s across Highland Perthshire, is another of the recipients.

It was spearheaded by Gavin Price, managing director of Fountain Bar in Aberfeldy.

He said: “I am very proud. This is great recognition for a heart-warming project.

“FeldyRoo was amazing. It brought businesses, volunteers and a community together as we have never seen before.”

Not-for-profit community organisation Roots of Linwood was hailed as a “godsend” for keeping Renfrewshire residents stocked with fresh fruit and vegetables.

Kirsty Flannigan, who manages the project for Enterprise of Linwood Community Development Trust, said: “Everyone involved is thrilled with this award.”

The team at Possibilities for Each & Every Kid (PEEK) have been named regional champion in Glasgow for their work in ensuring families have not gone without essential supplies.

“We are very proud of our team. They have consistently gone above and beyond to reach and support our families,” said Emma Hill, the charity’s head of operations.

Scotland Loves Local is spearheaded by Scotland’s Towns Partnership (STP), with the support of the Scottish Government, to help the country’s response to the pandemic by thinking local first for all shopping and service needs.

STP’s Chief Officer, Phil Prentice, described the dedication with which people have supported those around them during the pandemic as “remarkable”, adding: “We’re delighted to shine a spotlight on the amazing difference that our High Street Heroes have made and thank them for all they have done.

“They are an inspiration – local people helping their communities and customers like never before. They highlight the vital part that high street businesses play in our lives and why we must support them to ensure they continue to be there for us.”

High Street Heroes Awards: Regional Champions

Aberdeen

Phionna McInnes, We Too

During Lockdown Phionna was faced with having to stay safe at home with her two children who were shielding. During that time Phionna rebranded to ’We Too’. She coordinated the distribution of ‘Safe at Home’ sensory boxes to children throughout the region.

Aberdeenshire

Syed Abdul Hamid, of Carron to Mumbai, Stonehaven

Carron to Mumbai has provided free or discounted meals to the elderly and NHS workers since the beginning of the pandemic, earning appreciation from people across Stonehaven. Staff have spoken of their pride in providing support.

Angus

Carol Malone and team, Community First UK – operators of the S-Mart Social Supermarket, Forfar

They provided 35,995 meals in the shape of free grocery packs, partnering with Fareshare and opening a discount store in Forfar High Street. S-Mart is Angus’s first social supermarket.

Argyll & Bute

Jilly Wilson, of The Square Peg, Lochgilphead

Jilly has worked relentlessly to support the communities in Lochgilphead, and in Tayvallich, working seven days a week to fulfil orders from her shop. She and her small team of staff also took on feeding between 120 and 180 essential workers – three meals a day for four weeks.

Clackmannanshire

Kincardine Community Association

They have helped with food parcels and to reduce food waste in the process. Volunteers have been hailed as “amazing” – from taking deliveries to collecting surplus food and making up bags of food for everyone in Kincardine that needed it.

Dumfries & Galloway

Colin Wilson, Castle Douglas Post Office

Colin single-handedly ran Castle Douglas Post office for 13 weeks through lockdown. In order to protect his staff, Colin decided to work alone. Many local businesses have praised his dedication, declaring that without him their business might not have survived.

Dundee

Jillian Crabb, Little Green Larder

Throughout lockdown, Jillian worked extra days to ensure customers could still get food as well as raising more than £1,000 for charity and donating food to the local community fridge. When she couldn’t find any vegan bakers to supply cakes she got her own kitchen certified.

East Ayrshire

Wm. Allan & Sons Butchers, Stewarton

The business, regarded as an integral part of Stewarton’s High Street, provided food vouchers to help families in need and experiencing debt and poverty due to coronavirus. This discount helped us more families to buy healthy meat for their families.

East Dunbartonshire

Mark and Sue Billington, Billingtons of Lenzie

The couple have been hailed as “the most hardworking and caring people you could wish to meet”, who created a safe environment for shoppers. They kept the shop open, provided a delivery service and support schools and youth groups in fundraising activities.

East Lothian

Brian Young, East Coast Carpets, Prestonpans

Brian helped feed a multitude of families and individuals struggling due to the crisis, helping to deliver approximately 3,000 meals to those in need. He always puts others before himself and has supported a range of charities and organisations.

East Renfrewshire

Tariq Chishti, Netherlee Post & News, Clarkston Road, Glasgow

In lockdown he became the go-to person, able to source whatever customers needed. For older members of the community, his food deliveries were lifesavers and his social media presence brought the community together.

Edinburgh

Mechanics at The Bike Station

They provided free recycled bikes – plus a helmet, lock and lights – to more than 200 key workers. Throughout lockdown, customers generally said they went “above and beyond” to supply recycled bikes amid challenging conditions, dealing patiently with queues.

Falkirk

Jamie Swinney and Stenhousemuir Football Club’s Community Help Initiative

Stenhousemuir FC’s Community Help Initiative (CHI) formed strong bonds with a group of partners to support the most vulnerable in the community. They have also supported local businesses throughout the pandemic.

Fife

Mr Ali’s Convenience Store, Rumblingwell, Dunfermline

The business was hailed “a lifeline”, especially to the elderly and people shielding and “a true credit to the community”. They provided free bread and milk to locals, donated goods to the local food bank, charities and the NHS.

Glasgow

Possibilities for Each & Every Kid (PEEK)

PEEK led a huge Covid-19 crisis response, which has seen it work with in excess of 1,000 children and young people, more than 1,245 adults and deliver 24,000-plus meals. They provide healthy and practical food parcels, nappies, baby milk and toiletries to families.

Highland

Carolyn Wilson, of Victoriana Florist and Gifts, Alness

Described as a “force for good”,  Carolyn organised local businesses to donate food. Initially she cooked and created meals in her own kitchen for those shielding. She gathered support from volunteers who arranged production and delivered up to 100 hot meals each day.

Inverclyde

Douglas Graham, Blackwoods the Butchers, Kilmacolm.

When lockdown hit, he and his staff decided to stay open albeit on limited hours. They provided a home delivery service and were able to deliver bread and milk along with their regular butchery products. For many villagers, elderly or self isolating, this was a vital service. They also provided a friendly face or voice in difficult times.

Midlothian

Penicuik Alliance

This non-profit making enterprise provides locally-sourced affordable food to the community and operates Penicuik Storehouse, described as an “anchor on the High Street”. It operated a free grocery service to those shielding in the community, honoured local suppliers and increased orders to distribute surplus that growers/suppliers had due to restaurants and cafes closing and putting orders on hold.

Moray

Ian and Rena Watson, of Cullen Bay Hotel, Cullen

They served free meals to the communities of Cullen, Portknockie and Findochty. Judges were told: “It’s thanks to local heroes like them and their initiative and that many vulnerable people had access to hot free meals during a time of uncertainty.”

North Ayrshire

Colin Young and Aces, Kilwinning

Aces have been purchasing and delivering fruit and veg, meat, cleaning products and activity packs for kids. These are for the elderly, vulnerable and anyone suffering. Colin and volunteers have been attending fruit markets at 3am to get produce.

North Lanarkshire

Nicole Pettigrew, Cumbernauld Covid-19 Support Group

She set up a Facebook group and formed a team to come to support the community. The Facebook page has 10,000 members and has helped with shopping, supplies for elderly and young children and in keeping spirits high.

Orkney

Laura Bruce and Duncan McLean, Kirkwall BID

Both have been critical to expanding the reach of Kirkwall’s Business Improvement District to support the promotion of businesses and help them respond to Covid-19. Laura combines BID work with a role at Orkney College. Duncan is the BID’s chairman, as well as running his own deli, Kirkness & Gorie.

Perth & Kinross

#FeldyRoo, Aberfeldy

Providing meals for the over-70s, #FeldyRoo delivered its first meal from Fountain Bar on March 19. By July 31, having teamed up with nine other businesses in the Aberfeldy area, they had delivered 38,807 more. On the way, around 140 volunteers signed up to help the scheme. It supported 300 people in Highland Perthshire.

Renfrewshire

Roots of Linwood

Described as a “Godsend”, Roots has provided fresh, quality products throughout. While they had limited stocks they thought outside the box by supplying mixed boxes of veg or fruit or both. Volunteers were praised for the way with which they supported the community.

Scottish Borders

Emma Reid, The Super Store, Peebles

Judges were told: “If there’s any way she can help, Emma’s on it. Concerned for those who didn’t fit into any government benefit categories, she organised a voucher scheme funded by local donations. These were distributed in local shops and could be used to pay for food or utilities.”

Shetland

Emma Miller, project manager, Living Lerwick

Her nomination stated: “Emma has worked so hard to make our town centre a great place to shop. It’s pretty, it’s clean and it’s welcoming. She has supported many businesses so that they could get back up and running. She always does her very best to help people.”

South Ayrshire

Daisy Chain / Prestwick Post Office

Owners Cherlene and Stephen Cooper have worked tirelessly to ensure the community’s needs were met and hygiene measures complied with. They went out to local businesses to help with their business cash and postal needs to save them going into other premises themselves.

South Lanarkshire

Brownlie’s of Biggar

Led by owners Donna and Bruce Morgan, they opened 24/7 for three-and-a-half months to meet massive demand for home deliveries and to ensure they were there for key workers, day and night. “No-one could have done more to keep the community going,” customers said.

Stirling

Go Forth Stirling BID

Danielle McRorie-Smith and the GFS team have worked hard to support Stirling’s business community. They have come up with a range of initiatives to ensure the city is safe and welcoming, including a “We’re Open; Shop Local” campaign.

West Dunbartonshire

River Radio, Leven

Alan Caldwell and his small team started up Leven Lockdown Radio to keep people connected. What started as a project for friends and relatives has now changed into a community radio station, River Radio, providing great support for the area.

West Lothian

Boghall Drop-in Centre

Judges were told “The team has been unbelievably selfless. They have worked tirelessly, making and delivering food parcels, organising lunches and much more. They have now started a community shop. These are amazing people.”

Western Isles

Back Community Council

The council has led an operation to place community larders packed with basic food items throughout the area during the pandemic. People can use them at will if they feel the need, avoiding stigma. “These have been a lifeline,” their nomination said.
