Heckmondwike man’s mini Royal Mail van is on display in luxury department store

A miniature ‘Postman Pat’ Royal Mail van made by a man from Heckmondwike has been selected for the Christmas display at one of the world’s most famous department stores.

Alton Tyrell built the mini Royal Mail van complete with cat from the iconic children’s TV programme from a converted electric scooter in a bid to make people smile.

Earlier this year dozens of videos circulated around social media after they spotted the 40-year-old in Morrisons, a McDonald’s drive-thru and on the high street.

The video quickly got back to Royal Mail who then asked him if they could display it in Selfridges on Oxford Street, London, during the festive season where they are offering a gift wrap service.

Alton rode the vehicle into the luxury store on November 3, just days before the second national lockdown, but is hopeful it will be admired when shops reopen for Christmas.

He said: “It’s great, it was (organised) through Royal Mail. They do a package service where they wrap stuff.

“They’d seen videos so they asked if it could be taken in.

“I’m already onto the next project and it’s cold anyway so it’s not like I can ride it around much.”

Alton said his wife and children were very proud of him.

“They can’t believe it,” he added.

“My wife was crying, she was that happy and I was more like ‘yeah alright.’

“I rode it into the shop while it was closed just before opening. The staff were filming me – they loved it.

“It looks really smart in there. It looks like it was meant to be in there.”

Alton will be collecting his red van back to West Yorkshire between Christmas and the New Year.
