Lancashire’s 498 new coronavirus cases as 24 more tragically lose their lives

There has been almost 500 further cases of coronavirus in Lancashire with two dozen more residents losing their lives at the hands of the disease despite infection rates falling across every county borough.

On Friday (November 27), Public Health England announced 498 people had tested positive for the virus in the latest 24-hour testing period.

This was a continued increase for the week, which saw 356 cases on Monday; 361 on Tuesday; and 481 on both Wednesday and Thursday.

It comes as Lancashire is preparing to enter Tier 3 lockdown restrictions on Wednesday (December 2) after Government decided to put the entire county under the harshest measures despite massively varying infection rates.

And it means that there were a total of 2,177 confirmed new cases of Covid-19 in Lancashire during the most recent working week, bringing the county’s total since the start of the pandemic to 61,188.

The largest increase came in Blackburn with Darwen, where there was 69 confirmed cases. South Ribble saw 53 new positive tests while the lowest increase came in the Ribble Valley, which recorded an increase of 17.

Case data includes people tested both through ‘Pillar 1’ methods – which is in hospitals – and Pillar 2 – which is drive-through test centres and swabs sent by Royal Mail.

It comes as Lancashire recorded a further 24 virus-related deaths on Friday, according to NHS England, bringing its death toll to 1,750 since the beginning of the pandemic.

There were 10 Covid-19 related fatalities at East Lancashire Hospitals, which is home to the areas in the county with the highest rate of infection.

Six people died at University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay while Blackpool Teaching Hospitals recorded five more deaths.

There was two deaths at Lancashire Teaching Hospitals, which operates Royal Preston Hospital, and one fatality at Southport and Ormskirk Hospital NHS Trust.

Coronavirus infection rates in all 14 Lancashire boroughs have fallen for the second consecutive day, the latest data has revealed.

An update of the rolling seven-day rate of new cases shows that no local authority has an infection rate above the 400 mark for the first time in two months.

Hyndburn continues to have the highest rate of any borough, but this has dropped from 446.7 cases per 100,000 people to 359.1.

And four areas now have rates below the England average of 186.6, with Lancaster the lowest in the county at 102.7
