An insider has accused Netflix of trolling the Royal Family after posting a ‘sinister’ trailer for a documentary about Princess Diana.

Senior palace sources hit out at a post on the streaming service’s official Twitter account, which claimed the documentary Diana: In Her Own Words would provide ‘answers’ to criticism of the latest series of The Crown.

The footage shows Princess Diana crying in an airport as she watches Prince Charles depart, saying in her own words: ‘You may recall me sobbing.’

The trailer was posted online earlier this week with the caption: ‘The documentary Diana: In Her Own Words answers much of what you’re asking.’

As the Daily Mail reports, a royal insider has now accused Netflix of ‘corporate trolling’.

The insider said: ‘It’s one thing to make a drama that not even the writer claims is entirely factual, but for Netflix to use its corporate social channels to create and post material that is one-sided at best feels like corporate trolling – it’s pretty sinister.’

It’s the latest controversial moment for Netflix after releasing season four of the acclaimed drama The Crown earlier this year.

The series has come under fire from a number of high-profile detractors over its depictions of Royal Family members, namely the show’s portrayal of Diana’s eating disorder as well as Charles’ affair with Camilla.

Members of the Royal Family have been targeted online as a result of the drama.

Prince Charles’ friends have also declared the series ‘trolling on a Hollywood budget’, with the Netflix drama criticised for not displaying a fiction warning at the beginning of the episodes.

Diana’s former butler Paul Burrell, however, has described The Crown’s depiction of Prince Charles and Princess Diana’s relationship as ‘pretty close to the truth’.
