Royal Mail office manager in Wallingford speaks out on postal delays

THE manager of a Royal Mail office in Oxfordshire revealed a local depot has been ‘deluged by mail’ as homes in parts of the county have been left without post for weeks.

People in Wallingford and Didcot slammed Royal Mail in November after continuous postal delays, with some letters and parcels taking two weeks to be delivered.

But office manager at the Wallingford depot Pete Harris, who has worked there for 34 years, explained that the depot is currently dealing with an unprecedented amount of post.

In a post on the Facebook community group the Wallingford Piper, he wrote: “What my staff are experiencing at present is completely off the charts.

“Nothing before has come anywhere close, they are doing a phenomenal job.

“There really are only so many hours in the day and, last week, there simply were not enough hours in the day to maintain the service throughout the whole of the unit to the same high standard.”

Mr Harris added that there are a number of deliveries, which he described as ‘challenging’, but that from Thursday the depot should be back on track.

He also appealed to residents to be ‘kind and courteous’ to postal workers as they are ‘truly going way beyond the call of duty’.
