Reddit user Chris, believed to be from the US, shared a snap of a Christmas card sent to him by his landlord Lee earlier this week, which read: ‘Chris, I figured the best Santa gift for you would be taking off half the January rent. So just pay $440 at the end of this month.’

Posting the note, he revealed he had been ‘struggling recently’ and ‘hadn’t received any other gifts’.

Other users said the post had left them weeping, with one commenting: ‘Nothing makes me cry and I have been called a robot before…I teared up.

One user added: ‘That’s pretty awesome, sure wish that would happen to me.’

The move comes days after social media users slammed a landlord as ‘disgraceful, insulting, and tone-deaf’ for acknowledging the stress that the pandemic has caused — and, in an effort to help, offering a postage-paid envelope for tenants to mail their rent checks in.

The note was handed out in Washington Square Apartments in Bellingham, Washington this month, and quickly earned international attention online after being shared on Reddit.

‘The stress of COVID can be made worse by the holiday season,’ the note reads. ‘We hope this one-time offering of a postage-paid envelope to mail your rent check will relieve some of that stress for you.’

As a photo of the note and envelope went viral, outraged internet users slammed the writer of the note as greedy, slimy, and scum

‘Seems like a round about way to say “I know we’re in a pandemic and you may be struggling but we still expect you to pay your rent on time,”’ wrote one.

‘What a slap to the face,’ said another.
