Plans to undertake a major revamp of the Royal Mail sorting office in Wrexham have been given the go ahead.

The proposals for the Regent Street site, which were submitted last year, include the demolition of some structures and a new 475 square metre extension added to the main building.

Car parking adjustments at the site would also be adjusted to “improve safety at the site.”

Speaking in October architects acting on behalf of the Royal Mail said the scheme had been drawn up as the facility was in need of a “significant investment”.

In a statement submitted to Wrexham Council, they said: “The brief is to simplify operations by demolishing standalone buildings and building an extension to the main building to improve efficiencies.

“Not only do the separate buildings affect operations, they are in need of significant investment to improve their condition.

“The proposals will help to tidy the site up from a series of disparate buildings with haphazardly arranged parking, to a sensibly and ordered arrangement, which helps to improve safety by reducing the number of pedestrians moving between the buildings.”

The plans have now been approved by the chief planning officer at Wrexham Council via a delegated decision.

As part of the works the first phase is set to see the removal of a vehicle car wash, fuel pump station and storage building to allow for car parking to be relocated.

The extension to the main building would then be created followed by the demolition of the existing sorting hall.

The architects said the site would remain operational throughout the development.
