Creative students work on police project

Students at RSA Academy in Tipton have made a make shift postbox for the police. PCSO’s Emerson Dunne and George Lewis, student Kieron Unitt and DT technician Jamie Quinn

Children at RSA Academy, in Bilston Road, in Tipton, worked alongside Police Community Support Officers, based at Tipton Town Police Station, to complete the project.

PCSOs Emerson Dunne and George Lewis worked alongside teachers and pupils aiming to boost community engagement.

Officers asked design technology students at the secondary school to create a makeshift post box for the police force to use. Head of the DT department at RSA Academy, Jamie Quinn, led the project.

The final design was eventually created from wood and made to look similar to a Royal Mail post box. It was also painted in the iconic pillar box red shade.

The post box features the West Midlands Police logo on one side and has a placard stating it was created by pupils at RSA Academy.

Speaking about the project, PCSO Dunne said: “We are trying to promote community engagement.

“Myself and my colleague had been and attended RSA Academy, one of our local secondary schools in Bilston Road. We had got in contact with the DT department of RSA and asked if they could make a make-shift post box for the police.

“It was made and painted by the RSA students and has now been completed.

“We wanted to give some recognition to the school and the students for their hard work.”

The post box was presented to the PCSOs at the school this week.

RSA Academy is part of the Central RSA Academies Trust, which also includes Abbeywood First School, Arrow Vale, Church Hill Middle School and Ipsley Church of England School.
