Cannabis parcels intercepted at East Midlands Airport cargo centre

Parcels crammed with cannabis have been intercepted by police at East Midlands Airport.

Suspicions were raised during routine screening at a cargo firm at the Castle Donington airfield yesterday evening, Thursday March 4, according to police.

Officers with East Midlands Airport Police were called to the unit and, on closer inspection, it was confirmed that five packages contained the Class B drug.

It is the latest illegal drugs find at a warehouse at the airport, which is the UK’s busiest pure cargo airport and second only to Heathrow in terms of cargo – handling over 320,000 tonnes each year.

The airport is the UK hub for DHL and UPS, and centre for support operations for TNT and Royal Mail.

It is not known at this stage which part of the country the illegal consignment was heading to.

Airport police revealed brief details of the haul in a Tweet to followers of its official Twitter account.

They said: “We attended one of the cargo companies at East Midlands Airport this evening. We seized five parcels of cannabis identified during routine screening.

“An investigation has commenced.”

A Leicestershire Police spokesman said: ” At around 9.15pm on Thursday (March 4) officers received a report that drugs had been found at a commercial premises on Beverley Road, Castle Donnington.

“Officers attended and a quantity of cannabis was recovered.”

It follows a similar incident on Monday, March 1, when airport police seized another five packages containing cannabis.

In that instance, officers revealed that the parcels had been heading to Northern Ireland before they were sniffed out and intercepted.

‘With the stench of this stuff how do the senders think it will get through,” said the airport police, referring to the previous bust.
